City
and Guilds Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills
What are the Key Features?
The
Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills has been designed
by City & Guilds
for boys and girls to provide basic training in construction skills
for those seeking employment in the construction
industry. You do not have to have any previous experience
or knowledge of the construction craft skills. Those who wish to study
this course must be prepared to work hard at developing practical skills,
and will be assessed to ensure it is appropriate for them in terms of
health and safety and level of qualification.
The qualification provides an introduction to construction crafts and
will specifically provide an understanding of particular craft tasks,
not occupational competence in the craft. The construction industry is
a major employer and driver for economic growth. With all the planned
development in this area of the UK it is experiencing huge problems in
attracting sufficient numbers of school leavers of the right quality.
This course is specifically designed to enable young people to develop
an interest in taking up a trade in this industry.
How is the course taught?
Students will study this course for twenty lessons per fortnight which
is every Tuesday and Thursday for the whole day. The emphasis will
be on practical skill development and students will be expected to
comply
with all
health
and safety
requirements
as appropriate to the industry including the wearing of safety boots,
hard hats and hi-viz jackets. Parents will be required to sign an agreement
regarding this and be expected to make a contribution towards the costs
of materials.
How is it assessed?
The Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills will
be awarded to successful candidates on completion of the required combination
of units. A total of eight units in all are required to achieve the
qualification. All these units require practical knowledge and skills
to be displayed through coursework. The units will be based upon the
crafts of carpentry, bricklaying and painting and decorating. Each
unit has an element of knowledge that has to be assessed. This covers
necessary basic health and safety and good working practices. This
is assessed by an additional multiple choice question test, via City & Guilds
Global On-line Assessment (GOLA) system. It will be completed as an
additional unit and will be useful for students who are expecting to
progress to higher level construction qualifications, such as NVQs.
Why study this course?
Students will be able to continue with construction related courses (NVQ’s)
at Brentwood Learning Partnership's Construction Centre.
