What are the key features?
This is a foundation vocational qualification which will focus on the development of the
underlying principles and practical skills required in the hairdressing and beauty industry.

The qualifications will help learners gain valuable insights into the industry, and will develop useful basic skills and relevant background knowledge.

How is the course taught?
Through observation of demonstration, skill practice and theoretical input you will learn:

Basic Hairdressing skills including shampooing and conditioning, reception, working as part of a team, Health & Safety, preparing for Hairdressing services and maintaining work areas.

Beauty Therapy – Health & Safety, reception, preparing and maintaining the Beauty Therapy area, assisting with facial and nail treatments.

You will also be expected to work towards a basic Key Skills qualification. This will
involve attending a Key Skills workshop to develop and practise your IT, Number and Communications skills and building a portfolio of Key Skills evidence.

How is it assessed?
Practical assessment through observation of skills and oral questioning. Theoretical
assessment through assignments and tests.

Why study this course?
This award is designed for anyone who may be contemplating a career, in either hairdressing or beauty therapy.

Following this course students can progress on to the following:
NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing, NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing, NVQ level 2 Beauty Therapy, NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing, Apprenticeship in Hairdressing, Diploma in Hair and Beauty studies, Foundation or Higher.

Those who complete a NVQ level 2 can progress on to level 3 in Beauty, Hair or Holistic Therapy.
