Higher Diploma - Construction and the Built Environment

What are the key features?
This Diploma is a professional qualification that has been designed by employers to enable learners to understand our built environment.
Students will work on a range of employer led activities that are produced to enable young people to develop the skills, knowledge and attributes that enable businesses to be successful and grow.
Diploma are for learners of all abilities who like a ’hands on’ approach to learning and want to combine practical experience with knowledge based learning.
How is the course taught?
Students will study this course for two days a week. The teaching style will put the student at the heart of the learning. A range of learning environments will be used including independent enquiry, creative thinking, self management, effective participation, reflective learning and team work. This will be carried out both within the campus and in the world outside. A full range of resources will be utilized.

How is it assessed?
Students will be assessed on a range of practical assignments and projects that ensure they develop knowledge and expertise on the design, creation and valuing of our built
environment. All students must undertake 10 days related work experience, complete an
extended project and undertake an Additional Specialist Learning course related to the
Diploma. All students must gain Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT at level 2 to pass the Diploma. Throughout the course students will develop personal learning and thinking skills which will also be assessed. The Diploma is equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grade A* - C.

Why study this course?
The construction and built environment industry is a major employer and driver for economic growth. There are literally hundreds of careers in this employment sector ranging from
engineer to project manager; architect to surveyor; estimator to estate management; town planner to materials technologist and supplier; environmental expert to ventilation designer.
